About
I completed this project for my furniture design class in the fall of 2018, the goal was to create a piece of furniture using only sheet-goods. I was inspired by Gerrit Rietveld’s abstraction of furniture and angular forms used on the zig-zag chair.
Rietveld described his chair as a “designer joke” and mine is similar. It appears fragile but is actually quite robust with interesting angles from all sides.

INSPIRATION
I was inspired largely by Gerrit Reitveld and Donald Judd, I wanted to incorporate sharp angles, geometric forms, creative uses of planes, and abstraction of furniture.

IDEATION

PROTOTYPING & TESTING
I made several prototypes to test the overall dimensions and angles, as well as the durability of the cantilever.

MAKING THE CHAIR

Cutting to size/angle.
Dry fit.

Support pieces.

First round of gluing.
Spring clamps.
Brackets for clamping.
Adding the support pieces.

Surface finishing.
